List of Travel Apps for iphone

Transportation:
Plane-

-Trips – Travel Manager
Trips brings together all the different aspects of your travel, including flights,
car rental, hotel reservations, meetings, and dinner reservations. Keep track of the
confirmation numbers, websites, and phone numbers for all the different elements of
your trip.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/trips-travel-manager-tripit-flight/id292990893?mt=8

**************

-Tripit
Technically more of a mobile website than an iPhone app. Forward all of your
airline, hotel, car rental and event reservations, Tripit will automatically
organize them putting all of your reservation information like addresses,
confirmation numbers, and times all in one spot.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/tripit/id311035145

******************

-Next Flight
Got bumped? Leaving early? Next Flight tracks scheduled departures from more than
4,200 airports and 1,100 airlines. It sounds overwhelming, but you can filter by
carrier. $2.99

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/next-flight/id296474127?mt=8

******************

-FlightTrack
A convenient app for finding out if your flight is on time when you don’t have
access to a PC. Its detractors claim it’s not 100% accurate 100% of the time, but
then what is? Cost: $4.99.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/ben-kazez/id296240202

*********************

-FlightTrack Pro
Made for busy travelers like you, just forward your airline confirmation emails to
plans@tripit.com and TripIt flight itineraries will appear automatically in
FlightTrack Pro. $9.99

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id302325893?mt=8

**********************

-Flight
If you’re flying, it’ll be a question you ask at least once if not several times
during your trip, “What’s the status of my flight!?” There are a number of apps out
there that can answer this right on your iPhone. The best one that’s free is simply
called Flight.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flight/id299496675?mt=8

***************

-iFlight (59p)
Nothing signals travel quite like staring up at the departures board and trying to
find out what’s happening to your plane. If you need to keep track of your comings
and goings, then iFlight is a well-designed virtual representation of that airport
experience – just pick your location and away you go.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iflight-uk/id321557200?mt=8

***********************

-FlightView
If you don’t fancy paying the 59p, then you could always log in to FlightView, which
has a phone-optimised website that delivers similar information.

-TravelTracker (£4.99)
One of the best bits about travelling is the anticipation: the part where you’ve
decided where you’re going to go, and have to start planning everything to do. This
clever service does a lot of the hard work for you, including working out your exact
plans when you forward the confirmation emails from your airline. The iPhone
application is basic – it’s largely an interface to the website, giving advice on
local attractions, restaurants and bars – but if you want to splash out, then try
TravelTracker, which adds more functions.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/traveltracker-with-tripit/id284918921?mt=8

**************

-Kayak- Yet another free application, Kayak’s app lets you search for and book
flights, hotels, and more. It’s pretty handy if you need to book stuff on the fly or
contact an airline. This app needs an internet connection.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kayak-flight-and-hotel-search/id305204535?mt=8

***************

-Flight Update
allows you to enter most any flight and track that flight’s status, even if it’s
several months away. Supporting airlines on every continent, Flight Update covers
more than 1,400 carriers throughout the world. $4.99

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flight-update/id295446978?mt=8

**********************

-Flight Status
Like the applications mentioned above, Flight Status offers the ability to check the
status of thousands of flights as well as live weather information. However, most of
Flight Status’ information is limited to the U.S. and Canada, and without the
additional features offered by the other apps, it may not be worth the $4.99.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flight-status-live-flight/id288760989?mt=8

*********************

-Travelocity TravelTools
This free application lets you check flight schedules, gate numbers, airport delays,
security wait times, and your itinerary (if you booked through Travelocity).
TravelTools also lets you search for “Hotels Near Me,” which includes room rates,
hotel photos, and traveler reviews. It may be just what you need when your flight is
canceled and you find yourself stranded at the airport overnight.

-Gate Maps
Costing less than a dollar, this application is worth every penny. Remember the last
time you were running through an airport trying to make a close connection, at a
loss for where you should be headed? Find your way through unfamiliar airports with
Gate Maps. Plan ahead and get detailed dining and shopping information by using
links to airport websites or quickly look at the basic terminal maps when you’re in
a rush to get to your gate.
Of course, there’s a catch, Gate Maps only offers maps for about 30 airports, most
of which are domestic.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gate-maps-lite/id300122155?mt=8

**********************

-Dopplr (free)
Like TripIt, this beautifully crafted service aims to help you make the most of your
travels. However, rather than focusing on the raw data from your itinerary, it
places the emphasis on the people you know and the places you are visiting. Let
Dopplr know where you’re going and when, and it tells you which of your friends and
contacts will cross paths with you (as long as they have Dopplr accounts too). Very
useful for regular travellers who want to see if somebody else they know is in town.
While the iPhone application could do with more features, it’s a handy window into
what’s going on in your extended social bubble.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id321105443?mt=8

*********************

-I’m In Town
Most travel iPhone apps focus on tracking flights, local information or language
help. But if you think about it, having a convenient way to notify friends and
family that you’re in town is equally useful. The application “I’m In Town” does
just that. With one click, it searches through your contacts list to find people in
your vicinity and tells them–via e-mail or text message–that you’re in town and
how to get in touch with you. You can specify how many miles from your current
location you want the app to search: five, 10 or 25 miles, for instance. You can
also alert people before you arrive, basically saying that you’re coming to town.
That’s pretty useful for 99 cents. The app works by searching address data in your
contacts list, so you do need to fill out that information first. It’s not
flashy-looking. The cool part of “I’m In Town” is the functionality, not the design.
Cost: $0.99

Train-

-GRAB IT
New York Nearest Subway ($1.99): This is one of the coolest apps we’ve come across,
though you need an iPhone 3GS for it to work. Nearest Subway uses augmented reality
to help you locate the closest subway station; once you’ve launched the app, simply
hold your phone up, look through it, and it projects the direction and distance to
various subway lines right on your screen. It even self-corrects as you walk, turn
or tilt the phone.

-CityTransit
Official NYC Subway Maps ($2.99): CityTransit is not nearly as spectacular as
Nearest Subway, but it more than gets the job done with its high-quality map,
stop-by-stop guide to all lines, a GPS-based station finder and advisories.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/citytransit-official-nyc-subway/id284444600?mt=8

****************

-iTransitBuddy
Metro North ($1.99) and StationStops Metro-North Grand Central Schedule ($2.99): It
doesn’t get any simpler or more useful than these apps for commuters who take
Metro-North trains into the city. Just select your station, and the next scheduled
train departure time pops up in an instant, along with the rest of the schedule. Of
the two, we’ll give the edge to iTransitBuddy, which is loaded with features, while
StationStops lists only trains to and from Grand Central and not in-between
stations.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/itransitbuddy/id295003357?mt=8

*******************

-MetroCard Maximizer (99 cents)
Tired of uneven balances on your MetroCard? Can’t figure what you need to add when
left with odd amounts? If so, this app, which does the math for you, pays for
itself

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/metrocard-maximizer/id330104880?mt=8

******************

-HopStop (free)
Works just like HopStop’s popular Web site to give you directions from Point A to
Point B via train, bus, taxi, your own two feet – or any combination thereof. The
fact that it integrates GPS and your contacts list is icing on the cake

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hopstop/id303217144?mt=8

*************************

-SKIP IT-iNap Arrival Alert (99 cents)
If you’re taking a long bus ride or train trip, iNap will use GPS to wake you up or
simply alert you when you’re in range of your destination. It’s a great idea, well
executed, but we stopped using it for one simple reason that’s more Apple’s fault
than iNap’s: It only works if it’s running. If you want to start iNap, then surf the
Web or check e-mail, you’re out of luck.

-iBART/Subway Guides
Carrying a subway guide in your pocket? Why? With a couple clicks you can have the
guide on your iPhone, where it won’t get torn, lost, or take up extra space. Unless
of course you lose your iPhone. In which case your Subway Guide is the least of
your concerns. If you’re going to the San Francisco Bay area, iBART is considered
one of the best.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibart-free/id288656960?mt=8

****************

-National Rail Enquiries (£4.99)
If you’re thinking about staying closer to home, then there are a variety of ways to
find your way around Britain’s various rail networks. The National Rail Enquiries
app helps you find out about your journey, getting you from Sussex to Strathclyde -
even down to its ability to tell you the platform number of your train. The free
equivalent, from the Trainline, is pretty good too.

-London Tube Deluxe (59p)
The multicoloured spaghetti strands of London’s underground system have their
devotees, but they’re also incredibly confusing. Being able to navigate your way
around the capital is crucial for anyone visiting London, and there are a host of
apps that can help you triumph on the Tube. These are the best two: a simple map
that makes life a little easier, or an all-singing, all-dancing deluxe version that
helps you plan your journey and includes up-to-the-minute information.

-CTA Tracker
CTA Tracker is the incumbent when it comes to Chicago bus tracking apps. It has been
around longer and has more positive reviews on iTunes. When you open the app for the
first time, it prompts you to search through the various Chicago neighborhoods in
order to eventually make your way to an intersection you want to check. Once you
find a particular intersection, the app will display which bus (or busses, as the
case may be) are scheduled to be coming by and how long before they get there.

-Yelp
Whether it’s finding somewhere to eat, tracking down a nearby boozer or something
else, Yelp has one of the smartest apps for seeing what’s best and where to go. With
rankings based on the reviews submitted by users online, it gives you a handy
reference or discovery tool. Coverage in Britain isn’t great – some of the listings
are out of date – but if you are travelling abroad (particularly America) the
information can be invaluable.

Hotels-

-HostelHERO- If you need to book a hostel, this app works well enough. It’s no the
best- it doesn’t get updated a lot and the interface is clunky but until
Hostelbookers or Hostelworld create their own, this will have to do.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hostel-hero/id311642926?mt=8

-Hotel Negotiator

customers’ loyalty accounts and preferences.

******************

-Starwood
Part of Starwood’s broader gamble on travel sharing, this application is supposed to
leverage their other social media technology. We haven’t had a chance to play around
with it as much as we’d like but suffice to say we’re not optimistic.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/spg-mobile-app/id312306003?mt=8

***************

-Four Seasons
Another new entrant into the iPhone app field, the Four Seasons application is very
pretty and does absolutely nothing exceptional. You can book rooms through it. They
also claim that it’s a “gateway to mini ‘escapes’ while on the go” but we have
absolutely no idea what that means.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/four-seasons-hotels-resorts/id331182360?mt=8

*************

-Travelodge
An early trailblazer in the iPhone hotel app market, the offering from UK chain
Travelodge is a bare bones booking engine. Meh.

-The Hilton, Embassy and Doubletree apps
will feature a “Request Upon Arrival” option, letting users order room service
before check-in. Conrad, Hampton, Homewood and Hilton Garden apps will lack Request
Upon Arrival, but like the others allow remote check in up to 48 hours in advance,
with various room customization options.

is the clear winner. Free

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/urbanspoon/id284708449?mt=8

-Local Eats
“Where should we eat?!” apps. For traveling Local Eats may have the edge since it

wallet, but if you want the absolute best an area has to offer it’s the way to go.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/localeats/id285518463?mt=8

**************

-Zagat TO GO
If you’re going to pay good money for a city guide, then you might as well make it
the staple. The Zagat guide is esteemed enough that even being rated by it usually
warrants restaurants to frame a certificate by their entrance saying so. Depending
on the city, the Zagat TO GO app has ratings on Restaurants, Hotels, and even
Nightlife and Shopping.

-iNeedStuff ($8.99)
Don’t worry about forgetting the broccoli on your next grocery run. iNeedStuff will
remember it for you. This location-aware shopping assistant will help you make your
shopping list and then remind you when you’re at the right store. You tap in the
items you need (milk, eggs, cheese), then, the first time you’re in a store to buy
them, you tell the software the name of the store as you’re in it. The next time
you’re in that location (your iPhone has a built-in GPS so it knows where you are),
the app will pop up with your list. You can even make lists based on recipes. The
location-aware part of the app will only work with Touch owners when they’re in a
Wi-Fi hotspot.

-Sale Price (Free)
This one is basically a glorified calculator, but its simple interface and practical
usage (plus it’s only a buck) make it a winner. Enter the starting price of a sale
item then use the slider bar to see what it really costs with the percent discount
and sales tax. It also works as an easy tip calculator.

Gas-

-Cheap Gas
Pretty straightforward—shows you the least expensive petrol wherever you are.
Awesomely helpful if you don’t know the area. (Free)

-My Gas Wars
A road trip is not a road trip without gas, or a car. Knowing where the nearest gas
stations are can mean all the difference between a great trip, and a really bad plot
for a horror film. These three apps will find you gasoline that’s the nearest, and
the cheapest. (Free)

-Gasbag
GasBag uses a user-built database of stations and pricing information. GasBag has
the best user interface, and performed quite well. To help grow the database as
quickly as possible, the developers have made adding stations and pricing
information about as easy as it can be. You can update prices for any existing
station with only a few taps, and adding a new station isn’t much harder than that.
(Free)

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gasbag/id289086967?mt=8

*****************

-iGas ($3)
iGas, the only program with a price tag, is also the only program that doesn’t use a

-Maps (free)
It might seem obvious, but maps are always your friend when you find yourself in an
unfamiliar place. One of the big developments in recent years has been the ability
to access maps and GPS location through mobile phones. When combined with a compass
- as in the iPhone 3GS – it becomes truly invaluable.

-Amsterdam Mobile Guide
This by far my favorite travel application. Made by Holland Tourism, this
application has anything and everything about Amsterdam. Find restaurants, bars,
museums, and hidden attractions. There is even a GPS function that will tell you
what is near your location. Recently, the Amsterdam Tourism created their own app
too, which is quite similar. Best of all? Both are free!

-Yelp’s “Monocle”
Yelp isn’t exactly a secret. The crowd-sourced reviews site has been a hit on both
the Web and on the iPhone. Here’s a new feature, however, that not everybody knows
about. Just shake an iPhone 3G S with the latest version of Yelp’s iPhone App three
times to activate a feature called “Monocle.” The idea, dubbed ‘augmented reality,’
is to point a screen, in any direction, and see information about what you’re
looking at superimposed over an image of the real world. Great concept. Skeptics
have always wondered, however, who could possibly gather a big enough pile of
information about the world around us to make such a service useful. Now we know:
Yelp.

World Travel:

Languages-

-Lonely Planet Phrasebook
At $10, it’s spendy for a one-language application, but—very cool—it speaks the

Money:
ATM-
-ATM Hunter
MasterCard has just unveiled and released their new iPhone app called ATM Hunter.
It enables users to quickly search an area for cash machines, by either entering an
address, or airport, no matter where in the world you are. Or if you have a 3G, you
can simply allow the app to locate you and show you the nearest locations by GPS.
You can use this iPhone app to search for ATM’s to make a deposit, or to find your
own bank to avoid any of those silly fees that some of these companies charge. If
you don’t care about the fees, cause you have a Rockefeller upbringing, then you can
just do a search of all nearby ATM locations, including those that are located in
local stores (not banks) and pick up some quick cash. The app will also provide you
with the distance between your chosen location and the nearest ATM, as well as
providing you driving directions with a map to the ATM location.
Other helpful features that come by using this MasterCard app are the ability to
search for ATM’s that are wheelchair accessible, and if it is a drive thru or walk
up.

Tipping-
-Big Tipper (59p)
You’ve found your destination, organised the journey, travelled there and ordered a
delicious dinner in a foreign language. Now … how much do you tip? Local customs
vary, but you suddenly draw a blank on how much you owe the waiter. Fortunately
there are plenty of applications for quickly calculating tips, and my personal
favourite is Big Tipper (£1.19 for iPhone) – it’s easily customised, splits the bill
between diners quickly and remembers your tipping history. Yes, it’s lazy. But
you’re on holiday.

International data rates can be crushing, so finding Wi-Fi is key, especially if you
